JOPLIN, MO. -- The University of Oklahoma women's cross country team finished fourth at the Missouri Southern Stampede Saturday morning, in Joplin, Mo., as sophomore Kelly Waters took second-place honors to lead the Sooners who had three top-ten finshers.
Waters completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17 minutes and 15 seconds to finish in second place, crossing the finish line behind three-time NCAA All-American Alex Becker of Tulsa who took top honors with a time of 16:36. On the season, Waters has yet to finish lower than second place.
The OU women's team had a trio of top-ten finishers as sophomore Jessica Engel (17:52), running in her first event of the season, finished seventh and junior Lauren Watson (17:54) crossed the line in 10th along with Waters' second-place run.
Rounding out the women's scoring were sophomore Lindsay Pierson with a time of 19:10 and sophomore Chelsea Jones finishing the course with a mark of 19:41. Senior Amanda Mayfield, while not contributing to Oklahoma's team score as the team's sixth runner to cross the line, finished with a time of 19:42.
The University of Tulsa won the event, scoring 32 points.
The Sooners return to action Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
