NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma softball team began team practice today following two weeks of individual workouts. Oklahoma opens the season with an intrasquad scrimmage on Wednesday, Sept. 24 and plays its first fall game on Friday, Sept. 26 against Seminole State. The Sooners play a total of eight contests, including the annual Fall Festival, Oct. 3-5.

Last season, Gasso's squad went 47-14 and advance to an NCAA Super Regional. Oklahoma went 16-2 in Big 12 play. The Sooners won their eighth NCAA Regional title and produced three second team all-Americans in D.J. Mathis, Savannah Long and Amber Flores.

“I am anxious to get started with this new group of athletes,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso. “We have a good nucleus of experience returning and a very athletic group of freshman to add to the mix. We have depth in our pitching staff with D.J. Mathis leading the way. We will have a battle for starting time at every position. It should be one of our deepest teams that we have had in a long while. I look forward to a competitive fall semester.”

Oklahoma welcomes six newcomers to the 2009 squad, including the younger sister of former all-American, Savannah Long. Karolyne Long prepped at Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Okla. and joins teammate Samantha Bachman, Katie Norris (Stillwater, Okla.), Evan Sallis (Muskogee, Okla.), Kirsten Allen (Union, Ky.) and Allee Allen (Buena Park, Calif.) on this year's team.
