NORMAN, Okla. -- Three student-athletes from the University of Oklahoma track and field program were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Men's and Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Teams released Thursday. Senior Chip Heuser earned All-District accolades on the men's side while sophomore Amy Backel and senior Catherine Odell received the honor on the women's side.
All three are now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Both Backel (civil engineering) and Odell (instructional leadership) earned perfect 4.0 GPAs while qualifying for last weekend's NCAA Midwest Regional in the javelin and 1,500-meter run, respectively.
With a 10th-place finish in the 1500 at the Midwest Regional, Odell closed out her Sooner career that saw the Enid, Okla., native earn seven All-Big 12 Conference honors and one All-America honor in 2007 as a member of the women's distance medley relay.
Backel became a full-time thrower in 2008 after spending the early part of her OU career as a multi-event athlete and responded with a program record in the javelin that led to an at-large selection for next week's 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships along with a "B" standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials. This year marks the second consecutive year that the Dillsburg, Pa., native received the honor.
Heuser, a zoology major, closed out his Oklahoma career with a third-place finish in the pole vault at the 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Boulder, Colo. The four-time NCAA All-American ranks second on the OU indoor pole vault record book.
