NORMAN, Okla. -- OU senior pitcher Lauren Eckermann was named to the ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District VI Softball First Team released on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. It marks the second consecutive year the Sooners have produced an all-district selection.

As a first team all-district member, Eckermann will be nominated for consideration for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American team. The Sooners have had seven Academic All-Americans in their history.

Eckermann has also been recognized this year for her community involvement as she was chosen as one of 10 softball finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award earlier this season. The finalists were chosen from a list of 30 candidates based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete which include classroom, community, character and competition.

The senior hurler has had a solid senior season for the Sooners in the circle as she finished the Big 12 regular season with a 1.33 ERA in conference action, which was second among all Big 12 players. Eckermann only played two seasons with the Sooners after transferring from the JUCO ranks, but she will finish in the top 10 of the OU career charts in strikeouts, victories, shutouts and winning percentage.

As the postseason begins, so do the award selections. The Big 12 awards will be given out Friday night at the annual awards ceremony. Academic All-Big 12, All-Big 12 and individual awards will be handed out at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium at approximately 7 p.m. Friday night.

The No. 7 Sooners (43-11, 16-2) will begin Big 12 Championship action Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma will play the winner of Kansas/Nebraska, who play at 5 p.m. on Friday.
