NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 7 Oklahoma softball team placed five players on the All-Midwest Region teams, including a team-leading four on the first team. Pitcher D.J. Mathis, catcher Lindsey Vandever, shortstop Savannah Long and outfielder Amber Flores highlighted the first team while junior first baseman Samantha Ricketts rounded out the second team.
The Big 12 dominated the All-Midwest First Team as 11 of the 12 first-team players were from a Big 12 school. Oklahoma led the way with four first-team selections while Missouri had three, Baylor had two and Texas A&M and Texas each had one each.
It marks the second consecutive year that the Sooners have had at least five players earn all-region honors.
Only a sophomore, Flores picked up her second consecutive first team honor while Ricketts, a 2007 All-American, is making her third career appearance on the all-region list after earning first team honors as a freshman and as a sophomore. Long was also a 2006 second team selection. Mathis and Vandever are each making their first appearances on the All-Midwest Region teams.
All five of OU's 2008 all-region selections were also named first team All-Big 12 earlier this month.
OU's All-Midwest Region first team selections are now eligible for All-America selection. The 2008 All-Americans will be announced on May 28.
The Sooners, a No. 10 national seed, open NCAA Tournament action this Friday against Oregon at 7:30 p.m. at the OU Softball Complex.
