NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma softball team traded in gloves and bats for feathers and glitter Thursday afternoon as the team spent two hours at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The squad split into groups and visited various areas of the facility to help patients and siblings get in the holiday spirit.

“It's important for us to take time to go into the community and give back,” said senior infielder Samantha Ricketts. “We can take so many things for granted, and it's amazing to see how something as small as a pipe cleaner can make a child happy.”

The agenda featured more glitz and glamour than the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade as student-athletes helped youngsters make turkeys from small plant pots and feathers and turned young ladies into princesses with crowns and jewelry made from pipe cleaners and glitter.

Senior pitcher D.J. Mathis echoed Ricketts' thoughts. “It is important to give back and to be thankful and grateful for all we have,” she said. “It means a lot to us to see these kids smile and be happy.”
