Softball Announces 2009 Schedule

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma Vice President/Athletics Director Joe Castiglione and head coach Patty Gasso announced the Sooners' 2009 softball schedule on Wednesday. The schedule features 21 teams from the 2008 NCAA Tournament field, including defending national champion Arizona State and runner-up Texas A&M.
“Again, we have one of the toughest schedules in the country,” Gasso said. “We wouldn't have it any other way. We enjoy playing some of the best competition in the country. It makes us better and prepares us for our Big 12 schedule and postseason.”
The Sooners begin the season at the Hawai'i Paradise Classic in Honolulu Feb. 5-7. OU squares off against Hawai'i, UAB and LSU before bracket play begins on the final day. The following weekend, the Sooners travel to Houston, Texas for the Marriott Houston Classic with host Houston, N.C. State, Texas State and Indiana.
Oklahoma hosts its first home contest of the season on Feb. 18 when Stephen F. Austin comes to Norman for a doubleheader at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners then travel to Palm Springs, Calif. Feb. 20-22 for the Cathedral City Classic. While out in the desert, the Sooners take on Cal Poly, defending national champion Arizona State, Nevada, 2008 Women's College World Series finalist Alabama and Massachusetts.
On return, the Sooners travel to Tulsa for the first game of a home-and-home with the Golden Hurricane on Feb. 25. Tulsa returns the trip on March 4 in Norman.
The 2009 OU/Sooner Legends Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 28-March 1 with Creighton and Saint Louis. All games will be played at the OU Softball Complex. After the second bout with Tulsa, the Sooners co-host the OU/Worth Tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Featured in the event are Tennessee and Northwestern.
“It's always our goal to bring good teams to Norman,” Gasso said. “It's important not only for the quality of play, but it gives our fans a treat. We're looking forward to some great matchups with Creighton and Saint Louis. We really think they will enjoy having two traditional powerhouses like Tennessee and Northwestern in our own backyard, as well.”
The Sooners open conference play on March 10 with a doubleheader against Texas Tech before venturing back to the Golden State for a final time for the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. OU faces Notre Dame, Florida State, DePaul, 2008 Women's College World Series finalist Louisiana-Lafayette, Cal State Fullerton and Bowling Green in the event.
The Sooners begin a four-game homestand on March 18 with Northern Iowa followed by a doubleheader with Iowa State and finishes with North Texas on March 25. After a two-game set at Texas, the Sooners return home to host Baylor (April 1), Nebraska (April 4 and 5) and Arkansas (April 8). OU heads to Kansas for two games with the Jayhawks on April 1-11 and host Oklahoma State on April 15.
The Sooners close out the 2009 home slate April 18-19 against Texas A&M. OU finishes the season the road at North Texas (April 22), at Missouri (April 25-26) and at Oklahoma State (April 29).
“The Big 12 is always a tough conference to compete in and this season is no different,” Gasso said. “I really like our home schedule. We have big home games again national champion runner-up Texas A&M, Baylor, Nebraska and Oklahoma State. It will be a fight, and we are up for the challenge.”
The 2009 Big 12 Softball Tournament is May 8-10 in Oklahoma City. The NCAA Tournament begins at campus sites with the NCAA Regional (May 15-16) and NCAA Super Regional (May 22-24). The 2009 NCAA Women's College World Series is slated for May 28-June 3 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma returns eight starters from last year's 47-14 (16-2 Big 12) team that finish second in the conference during the regular season, The Sooners return three all-Americans in Samantha Ricketts, D.J. Mathis and Amber Flores. Oklahoma welcomes six newcomers this spring. Gasso is beginning her 15th year at the helm of the OU program and has a career mark of 848-281-2 (686-222-2 at OU).
