NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Oklahoma softball team continued their fall schedule winning the annual Fall Festival by defeating St. Gregory's University 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex at Marita Hynes Field.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when with two outs sophomore outfielder Krystle Huey singled and then stole second base. Sophomore Chana'e Jones would next be hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second. Second baseman Amber Flores followed with a three-run blast into the left center field stands off of St. Gregory's pitcher Sarah Bradley giving the Sooners a 3-0 lead.
The Cavaliers would not go down without a fight as they battled back to trim the OU lead to 3-2 after Courtney Renaga hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning for St. Gregory's.
However, the Cavaliers would not score again. Oklahoma pitcher D.J. Mathis picked up the win for the Sooners and turned in a strong performance throwing four and one-third innings, while allowing only one earned run on two hits, with five strikeouts and no walks.
Freshmen pitchers' Kirsten Allen and Allee Allen came in and relieved Mathis, shutting down St. Gregory's offense and preserved the lead for the Sooners.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Sooners scored again as freshman shortstop Karolyne Long singled with one out and then advanced to second base on a fielder's choice. Outfielder Chana'e Jones would step up to the plate and deliver a single that brought Long home as Oklahoma went up 4-2.
The OU offense finished the day with six hits. Amber Flores was 1 for 3 with three runs batted in and Chana'e Jones 1 for 2 with one run batted in as well. Also picking up hits for the Sooners in addition to Karolyne Long, was sophomore outfielder Krystle Huey, sophomore third baseman Dani Dobbs, and freshman Katie Norris.
OU's final game of the fall season is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 15 against North Central Texas at 5 p.m. In addition to all scheduled games, the squad will hold an intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 3:30 p.m. All OU softball practices are open to the public.
