NORMAN, Okla. - Head coach Patty Gasso has announced that senior shortstop Savannah Long has been named captain of the Oklahoma softball team for the 2008 spring season.
"Savannah has been waiting for this moment to be the leader and has really been the ultimate leader for us during her time here and really took ownership of the team this offseason," Gasso said. "She has earned the respect of her teammates and I have the utmost confidence in her and her ability to lead this team."
The team selected the captain based on characteristics such as work ethic, positive attitude and consistency both on and off the field.
"This is a tremendous honor for me and it means a lot to me that my teammates and coaches have that kind of respect for me," Long said. "Just being a part of this team is a huge honor and I'm looking forward to getting the season started. We have set a lot of great goals for the season and we can't wait to begin working on them."
Long is one of four seniors on the 2008 squad that will open the spring season on Feb. 8 against UCLA in Westwood, Calif.
The Sooners will begin spring team practice on Jan. 22 as it prepares for its 56-game regular season schedule, which includes 25 games against teams that advanced to the 2007 postseason.
