NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma softball team started off its fall season in impressive fashion Wednesday night as the Sooners defeated Seminole State, 31-3, in a 12-inning game.
The Sooners outscored the Trojans 8-1 in the first six innings and the offense took off in the final six frames as OU outscored Seminole State, 22-2. The Sooner offense notched 38 hits while the Oklahoma defense allowed only five Trojan hits in the entire 12-inning game.
2007 All-American Susan Ogden and 2007 All-Region performer Amber Flores highlighted the offense as each pounded a home run. Ogden only played the first six innings and was a perfect 3-for-3 while Flores went 3-for-3 in the final six innings with four RBI.
OU's newcomers also shined the in the game. Outfielder Krystle Huey went 4-for-6 with two RBI and a triple. Fellow freshman Chana'e Jones put on a show in the final six innings with a perfect 4-for-4 outing with two RBI and a triple. Freshman infielder Dani Dobbs also showed her talent with four hits in the contest, including two RBI.
"I'm very pleased with our first performance of the fall season," head coach Patty Gasso said. "I really love the way that this team is responding when I talk to them about making changes. They know how to do it."
Defensively, all four OU pitchers saw an equal amount of time with three innings each. The pitching staff only allowed a combined five hits and didn't walk one batter in the entire 12-inning game.
Junior Morgan Hudsonpillar opened the game and only allowed one hit while striking out four in the first three innings. Junior D.J. Mathis pitched innings three through six and scattered one hit and gave up one run. Jadyn Smith followed that with a four-strikeout performance in her three innings of play while allowing two hits and one run. 2007 Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Year Lauren Eckermann closed out the game in the final three innings and struck out four while giving up one run on one hit.
OU next takes the field in a doubleheader as it hosts the Fall Festival Friday. The Sooners will face Murray State at 3 p.m., followed with a game against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, OU will play two games (3:45 p.m., 6 p.m.), followed by another doubleheader Sunday, with games scheduled for 2:30 and 4:45 p.m.
