INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA announced Friday that the University of Oklahoma was awarded the 2009 Midwest Region Outdoor Track and Field Championships, one of four qualifying meets for the NCAA National Championships.

"On the heels of winning a 2007 NCAA men's track and field regional championship," OU Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione said, "we are excited to be hosting the event in 2009 at John Jacobs Track and Field Complex, one of the finest on-campus facilities in the country."

The four NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 29-30, 2009.

"We are very honored and privileged to host such a high-profile event," OU Head Coach Martin Smith said. "One of the program's goals is not only to increase the strength of our teams, but to also bring world-class track and field meets to Oklahoma.  Having the regional in 2009 will attract worldwide focus on Norman and also help improve the quality of our annual home meets."

The meet will be the third major championship at John Jacobs Field since the complex was renovated in 2004.  Oklahoma hosted the Big 12 Championships in 2004 and NCAA Midwest Region Championships in 2005 and was praised for the excellence of its facility and event management.

"Martin Smith and his staff have done a remarkable job of rebuilding our track and field programs and our administrative staff is enthusiastic about doing whatever it can to help them achieve even more," Castiglione added. "Our men's and women's track and field teams are drawing a lot of attention around the nation and I am sure Sooner fans will be anxious to support them as they pursue regional championships in 2009."

It was also announced that the University of Oregon would host the West Regional in 2009, leading to its duties of hosting the 2010 NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  The other two regional sites have yet to be announced.

The regional championship qualifying format for track and field has been in effect since the 2003 season.
