OSAKA, Japan - Two former Sooners competed Wednesday at the 11th IAAF World Athletics Championships as they attempted to advance through heats and earn medals for their respective home nations.

U.S. Virgin Islands native Laverne Jones took second in her preliminary heat of the women's 200-meter dash to advance to the quarterfinals. Jones duplicated her prelim time of 23.03 seconds in her quarterfinal heat, placing fourth and advancing to the semifinals to be run Thursday.

American Sanya Richards was the quarterfinal heat winner and overall leader with a season best mark of 22.31.

Jamaican Michael Blackwood failed to advance out of the men's 400-meter dash semifinals after finishing eighth in the first heat with a 45.60-second run.

Americans won each of the three semifinal heats with LaShawn Merritt (44.31), Jeremy Wariner (44.34) and Angelo Taylor (44.45) leading all competitors entering Friday's main event.
