NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head track and field and cross country coach Martin Smith announced that 12 student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to compete for the Sooners beginning with the 2007-08 season.
Six men and six women signed during the period that ends today, Wednesday, Aug. 1. They join six incoming freshman who signed last November during the early period.
"I'm very excited to welcome these men and women to our program," Smith said. "The coaching staff did an excellent job in scouting talent and finding several recruits who could stand out in multiple events.
"Many of these student-athletes will make an immediate impact to our performance on the conference and national levels. They will help us achieve our goals -- defending the men's Big 12 title, continuing to increase in the conference standings with the women and improving both teams nationally."
Joining the reigning Big 12 Conference Men's Outdoor Champions are Tony Clement (Hagerstown, Pa.), Scott Cooper (O'Fallon, Ill.), D'Andre Fisher (Edmond, Okla.), Paul Gill (Glendale, Ariz.), Dominique Johnson (Cedar Hill, Texas) and Sam Kranz (Maple Park, Ill.)
Christina Ferber (Southlake, Texas), Latoya Greaves (Kingston, Jamaica), Latoya Heath (Kingston, Jamaica), Dominique Jacobs (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Demeeka Jones (Lufkin, Texas) and Amanda Mayfield (Norman, Okla.) join the OU women's track and field team.
The cross country team officially reports Aug. 14 while those who compete only in track and field report the next day. Several talented student-athletes are expected to walk on to the team.
The men's and women's cross country teams begin their season Sept. 1 at the Golden Hurricane Festival in Tulsa.
