NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma's Phillip Bryan fired a first-round 76 Monday and stands in a tie for 103rd at the 82nd U.S. Amateur Public Links held at the Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill.
Play was suspended at 2:28 p.m. (CST) due to lightning in the area with 78 golfers still on the course.
Bryan, who enters his senior season on the men's golf squad this fall, was +1 through four holes after a bogey at his starting hole, the par-4 10th. The Mustang, Okla., native rebounded with a birdie at the 525-yard par-5 14th before dropping a shot at the 15th and 18th holes to finish the back nine at +2.
Moving to the front nine, Bryan birdied the par-4 first hole but gave a shot back at the 555-yard second. After pars at his next four holes, the two-time academic All-Big 12 selection double-bogeyed the par-5 seventh, dropping to +4 where he would finish his round after back-to-back pars at the eighth and ninth.
Former Sooners Justin Fraley and Nick Sheedy joined Bryan in the 156-man field. Sheedy, who competed for the Sooners from 2004-07, stands with Bryan at +4 through 10 holes of play before the inclement weather forced the Burlington, Iowa native off the course.
Fraley, who completed his senior season at OU in 2005, opened with a 3-over-par 75, finishing round one in 88th.
Tuesday's 18 holes will conclude the 36-hole stroke play portion of the tournament with the top 64 players advancing to match play. The opening round of match play will commence on Wednesday where the field will be narrowed to 32.
