NORMAN, Okla. -- OU senior Phillip Bryan was eliminated from the 82nd U.S. Amatuer Public Links in a hotly contested battle with Cody Paladino of Kensington, Conn.
In the first round of match play at the 7,048-yard Cantigny Golf Club, the two battled back-and-fourth throughout the round before Paladino came out on top 2 & 1.
Paladino took a 1-up advantage after Bryan bogeyed the first but the Kensington, Conn., native double-bogeyed the par-5 second hole allowing Bryan to square the match. The OU senior made four at the par-3 third resulting in Paladino re-taking the lead.
Bryan played steady golf, parring his next four holes, while two Paladino bogeys moved Bryan to 2-up through eight holes. Paladino cut into the lead with a par at the ninth to send the match to the back nine with Bryan holding a 1-up advantage.
A bogey at the 10th by Bryan moved the match back to all square where it remained until the 12th hole. Paladino birdied the 12th to retake the lead but it was short lasted as Bryan countered with a birdie of his own at the 13th to square the match.
Paladino played his next four holes in even-par and took a two shot advantage into the 17th. Needing to make birdie to extend the match, Bryan made a par at the 17th.
Former Sooner Justin Fraley was also eliminated in the opening round 2-up to Lucas Lee.
