Sooners Solid Friday at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. The Oklahoma men's 4x100-meter relay qualified for the “Championship of America” main event as they placed sixth overall in the preliminaries after finishing in 40.40 seconds, the team's first result this season under the regional qualifying standard.

Jamaica's University of Technology squad was fastest overall at 39.86 followed by the NCAA's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked, respectively, men from Florida State (40.09) and LSU (40.09).

The OU women's 4x100-meter relay of Leslie Cole, Yolanda Goff, Scottesha Miller and Larica Urbina finished sixth in the finals, clocking 44.92. No. 1-ranked LSU was first at 43.66, closely trailed by South Carolina (43.80).

Sheldon Leith qualified for the men's 110-meter high hurdles finals with his preliminary heat victory. Leith ran the fifth fastest time overall at 13.93. Auburn teammates Shamar Sands (13.73) and Ty Akins (13.81) were first and second.

The men's 4x400 finished the prelims eighth overall after placing fourth in its heat at 3:09.99. South Carolina was fastest at 3:07.01.

The college's men's 4x400 final is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Central on Saturday.

OU senior Leonarde Smith placed 12th of 50 athletes in the college men's 400-meter intermediate hurdles, clocking a 53.58 in a heavy downpour.

NORMAN, Okla. Inclement weather forced the postponement of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at the Sooner Invitational, leaving only the hammer throw to be decided Friday afternoon.

Heath Smith of North Texas, the school's record holder in the javelin, was the men's event winner. Smith recorded a best of 154 feet, 1 inch (46.97 meters).

Texas Tech's Ozioma Okolie dominated the women's hammer, throwing a regional qualifying distance of 182-9 (55.71) to beat second place Deleanor Kirkpatrick of Oklahoma State (163-6, 49.84).

Oklahoma's Taylor Scott finished eighth with a personal best of 128-0 (39.02). OU freshman Laresa Miller made her collegiate debut in the event, finishing 10th at 114-4 (34.86).

The Sooner Invitational runs Saturday with the first event of the decathlon beginning at 9 a.m. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and track events start at 2 p.m.

The closing events of the decathlon and heptathlon will begin Sunday, April 29, at 9 a.m.

The meet is the final at home for Sooners Kevin Bookout, Cale Drumright, Scott Martin, Portia Nash, Ronnie Pines, Dermillo Wise and Frankie Wright.
