April 25, 2007 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.  The No. 3 Oklahoma softball team recorded its fourth National Player of the Week as shortstop Savannah Long was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Co-National Player of the Week for the week ending Apr. 22, the association announced Wednesday.  Long, who was also named the Big 12 Player of the Week, shared the honor with N.C. State pitcher Abbie Sims.

Long joins Norrelle Dickson, Samantha Ricketts and Mariee Mena as one of the four Sooner players to receive the honor this year, marking a school record. Prior to this season, Oklahoma had never produced more than one national player of the week in a season.

The shortstop hit .385 for the week with three home runs and five RBIs in sweeps of No. 8 Baylor and Nebraska.

The junior sparked the sweep of Baylor with a two-run home run in game two that tied the game at 3-3. She snapped a five-game slump by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game of the twin bill.

The Midwest City, Okla., native carried that momentum into the weekend, where she tied the OU single game home run record with a pair of round-trippers against the Cornhuskers. She hit a solo home run in the fourth that cut Nebraskas lead to a single run, but the biggest home run of her career came in the seventh when she delivered a two-run walk-off home run to right center on the first pitch of the at-bat to rally the No. 3 Sooners from a 9-8 deficit.

Long and third-ranked Oklahoma return to action Wednesday night for part two of Bedlam in Stillwater, Okla.  First pitch between the Cowgirls and Sooners is set for 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
