NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma baseball team completed its first intrasquad scrimmage on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.  The red squad defeated the white team, 6-0, in a seven-inning contest.

Sophomore Jeremy Erben (Weatherford College) earned the win after lasting three innings in the start.  Erben allowed two hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Seniors Ryan Mottern and Mike Gosse plated four of the red team's six runs on the afternoon.  In the third inning, Mottern's RBI single was followed by Gosse's two-run base hit to give their squad a 4-0 advantage.

In the fifth, Mottern increased the lead with a sacrifice fly.  Gosse and sophomore Jamie Johnson led all Sooners on the day with two hits apiece.

"Overall, I was pleased with everyone's effort, especially with it being this early in the fall and today being our first intrasquad," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway.  "The winning team swung the bats really well, especially Ryan (Mottern), Aljay (Davis), Mike (Gosse) and Jamie (Johnson).

"I thought Jamie played extremely well today. He got some key hits and did what he is going to do well as a leadoff hitter in our lineup, create havoc on the basepaths.  Several of our newcomers have that ability with tremendous speed around the bases, including Matt Harughty, who stole second and third in the final inning."

Sophomore Garrett Richards relieved Erben in the fourth inning and tossed two innings of scoreless baseball.  Richards struck out one batter and allowed two hits and a walk.

For the white team, sophomore Andrew Doyle made the start and surrendered five hits and four runs (two earned) in three innings.

"Several of our pitchers threw some solid innings today," added Golloway.  "Jeremy had a good start and Garrett, Chase (Anderson) and Antwonie (Hubbard) were great in relief.

"Hubbard had a one-two-three inning and looked like the player we saw before he got drafted in the 12th round two years ago. It was also encouraging to see Chase throw two solid innings of shutout ball in relief as he prepares for his start in Sunday's scrimmage."

The Sooners' next scrimmage is slated for Wednesday around 2:00 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.  The intrasquad is free and open to the public. In addition, the Sooners will also scrimmage this week on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m.
