OU Remains in Sixth at Oak Tree

EDMOND, Okla. -- The OU men's golf squad improved 17 shots over Sunday's opening round as the Sooners move to Tuesday's final round in sixth place at the second annual Oklahoma Intercollegiate at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Okla.

The Sooners shot a second-round team score of 294 (+10) on Monday at the 7,412-yard, par-71 layout.

With the weather front that included 35-mph winds on Sunday out of the way, the overall scoring average improved almost three full shots on the second day of play for the 11-team field.

Oklahoma was led by Tyler Rody, who fired a career-best, 2-under-par 69. His round was highlighted by a stretch of six birdies in 10 holes midway through the day. With the strong showing, the Andover, Kan., native jumped from 27th to ninth on the leaderboard.

Rody began his birdie stretch at the par-4 sixth, which played as the toughest hole in Sunday's round. A bogey at the par-4 seventh was erased by birdies at 8, 9, 11, 13 and 14, moving Rody to -2 on the day. Rody played his last three holes at even par with a bogey at the 16th offset by a birdie at the par-3 17th.

The sophomore has played his last 29 holes at 2-under-par.

Other Oklahoma scores on Monday included Eric Durbin's 73 and Jesse Schutte's 74. Schutte made the turn at -1 on the round, but bogeyed four of his last seven and stands in 25th. Durbin offset bogeys at the fifth and seventh with birdies on the par-4 second and par-4 ninth, playing the front nine at level par. The Houston, Texas, native played his final seven holes at -1, finishing the day in 11th.

Rouding out the OU team scoring were senior Phillip Bryan and sophomore Ben Blundell, who shot 78 and 79, respectively. Bryan's back-to-back 78s places the Mustang, Okla., native in 32nd while Blundell stands a shot back and in 36th.

Competing as an individual for the Sooners, Ryan Sirman improved six shots over his opening round 80 with a 3-over-par 74 in the second round. Sirman heads to Tuesday's finale in 25th with the best score of any competitor playing as an individual this week.

OU's Liam Logan, also competing as an individual, carded the fourth-best score improvement of any player in the field on Tuesday, finishing the day in 36th after rounds of 84 and 73.

Oklahoma's Spencer Rives and Cameron Meyers rounded out the Sooner individual scoring with rounds of 81 and 82, respectively. Myers stands in 52nd while Rives moves to Tuesday's final round in 55th.

First-round leader Will Griffin of Texas Tech and Jason Turner of Arkansas lead in the medalist race by two shots over the next closest competitors.

SMU moved from fifth to first in the team standings after a second-round, 3-under-par 281. The team result was the first under-par score ever in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate and bested the previous single-round mark by six strokes.
