Volleyball Sweeps in First Win

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma volleyball team recorded its first win of the season with a sweep of Idaho in Saturday action at the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational at the McCasland Field House.

After a heartbreaking loss Friday night against Arkansas, the Sooners bounced back to hand the Vandals a 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-17) loss.

The Sooner offense, which hit .324 for the match, was highlighted by Laura Tomes' career-high 18 kills and .552 hitting percentage. Tomes dominated the first game of the match to pace the Sooners as she recorded eight kills in game one on a .727 hitting percentage.

Senior Joanna Schmitt added additional offensive support as she recorded her second straight match with double-digit kills (10).

After setting a career high with 66 assists against Arkansas Friday night, senior Rachel Jackson continued to guide the offense tallying 45 assists for the Sooners.

Newcomer Mariana Blum, a former two-time juco All-American, also looked stellar on the offensive side with seven kills on a .312 clip while juniors Sarah Weiland and Anna Stadel added six kills each.

At the net, Oklahoma recorded eight total blocks to Idaho's four as Tomes led the Sooners with three block assists while Jackson, Stadel and Schmitt added two helpers a piece.

Libero Anna Monsen collected 13 digs while Schmitt and Blum each recorded seven to hold the Idaho offense to a .141 hitting percentage.

The Sooners (1-1) will look to continue their winning ways as they round out the tournament with a match at 7 p.m. tonight against North Carolina (1-1) in the tournament finale.

All tournament action is taking place at the Howard McCasland Field House. Day passes for the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational are $7 for adults and $5 for children. All OU students are admitted free with an OU ID.
