Sooners in the NPF: Week 9

NORMAN, Okla. - As a bonus to OU softball fans, SoonerSports.com will provide a weekly glimpse at five former players competing in the National Pro Fastpitch league this summer. Today's installment covers the ninth week of the NPF season for the Sooner alums. Check back every Tuesday for an updated look at the Sooners in the professional ranks.

Five former Oklahoma softball players have joined the National Pro Fastpitch League, which is in its third season. Jennifer Stewart, April Valdez and Kristin Vesely are making their debut in the professional ranks while Christina Enea and Heather Scaglione enter their second season with the NPF.

Valdez, Scaglione and the Arizona Heat completed a sweep of the Southern California Hurricane this weekend in four games. Scaglione, playing only in the fourth game, went 1-for-3 at the plate. However, on her one hit, she drove in two runs to put the Heat up for good in the fifth inning.

Valdez made the pitching start for the Heat in game four and earned the win with a shutout of the Hurricane. Equally impressive at the plate, Valdez recorded three hits and an RBI in the series.

Vesely and the New England Riptide took the series against the Connecticut Brakettes, 3-1, in this week's action. Vesely played a key role in game three, moving a runner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. The Riptide went on to win that game with a score of 5-4. The Riptide currently sit in second place in the league, owning an 18-11 record.

Stewart picked up the only win for the Philadelphia Force this week against the Akron Racers. In game one, Stewart pitched a complete game shutout in a 7-0 win. The Force went on to lose the next three games against the Racers. Stewart pitched in game four, going four innings in the loss. It continues to be a frustrating season for the Force, as they hold last place standing in the league with a 9-19 record.

Christina Enea and the Chicago Bandits dropped three of four games to the USA World University Team, who were playing fresh off their gold-medal victory at the World Championships. Despite the losses, they maintain their league-leading 23-6 record.

While Enea didn't see any time on the field in the series, former teammate and current Sooner Norrelle Dickson did. Dickson, a member of the World University Team this summer, came up huge in game one with a double to lead off the first inning and finished out the series with an RBI triple in game four to seal USA's 6-4 win over the Bandits.
