NORMAN, Okla. The track and field season isn't quite over for Sooners Amy Backel and Katherine Johnson.
The duo tests its mettle against the nation's top junior athletes at the 2006 USA Junior National Outdoor Championships, which begin Wednesday, June 21, in Indianapolis, as many future Olympians will be on hand to display their sprinting, throwing and jumping abilities.
These athletes will compete for a national title and the right to be tagged the best male or female under 21 years old in the U.S.

Backel will compete in the women's heptathlon a series of seven events that include all the elements of track & field and the javelin throw.
With a personal best javelin throw of 147 feet, five inches (44.93 meters) and heptathlon score of 4,737 points, Backel was ranked second and seventh, respectively, in the events among the declared entries as of Monday.
The two-day long heptathlon begins Wednesday with the 100-meter high hurdles at 12:30 p.m. The open javelin throw is Thursday at 9:45 a.m.
Johnson will compete in the women's high jump Friday, June 23, at 4:30 p.m. At 5-8.75 (1.75), she was ranked third among the event's declared entries.

Backel and Johnson recently completed their freshmen seasons at the University of Oklahoma, one of the most successful for the OU women's team.
The 2006 USA Junior National Outdoor Championships take place June 21-25 at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI in downtown Indianapolis. The meet runs concurrently with the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships as the selection meet for the 2006 World Junior Championships in Beijing, China.
