NORMAN, Okla. - As part of its preseason conditioning tradition, the Oklahoma softball team held its sixth annual triathlon Thursday afternoon on the OU campus. This season's triathlon was different than past years as each the team broke into six different groups of three. One member of each team participated in either the run, swim or bike portion of the triathlon.
Susan Ogden, Amber Spaulding and Jamie Fox won the overall group award as Fox swam the first leg and Ogden went next on the bike and Spaulding completed the triathlon with the run portion that ended at home plate at the OU Softball Complex.
In addition to the overall winning group, there were also individual winners in each category. Ogden owned the best time on the bike while sophomore Jeannie Douglas won the swim portion and senior Jade Prather recorded the best mark in the run division.
Another novelty to the triathlon this season was the strength portion of the triathlon which was won by the group comprised of Norrelle Dickson, Stacia Aleman and Samantha Ricketts.
The strength and conditioning portion of the contest included an obstacle course and a tug-of-war contest. The obstacle course included a race with each girl holding 15-pound weights followed by an agility drill and concluding with push ups and sit ups by all members of the group.
The Sooners, who finished the fall with a perfect 9-0 record, will continue with individual practices until Dec. 5 when the team breaks for finals week and Christmas Break.
Official team practice will begin on Jan. 22 as the Sooners prepare for their season opener against Louisville on Feb. 9 in Miami, Fla.
