Men's Track & Field Opens Season in Top 25

January 17, 2006 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's track and field team tied for 25th in the season's first Trackwire Top 25.

The University of Arkansas earned the No. 1 spot. OU tied for the final spot in the rankings with Big 12 foe Baylor.

The Trackwire Top 25 projects a hypothetical score for the NCAA meet, factoring in injury reports and other variables supported by information gathered from coaches and NCAA qualifying competitions across the country. This projection is generated by scoring the Dandy Dozen, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event.

Oklahoma Track & Field | 2006 Schedule

The Dandy Dozen is selected using quantitative values that measure performances in past major competitions (such as conference championships, national championships and Olympic competition), durability and freedom from injuries, demonstrated ability to compete well in multiple rounds of competition, ability in other events, head-to-head competition with other top athletes, and personal or seasonal bests.

Oklahoma pole vaulters sophomore Chip Heuser and senior Scott Martin were ranked fourth and 12th, respectively, in the first edition of the Dandy Dozen.

Heuser captured the pole vault title at the Sooners' season-opening meet in Fayetteville, Ark. He was the only athlete to clear 17-6.50 (5.35 meters), surpassing the NCAA provisional standard.

Other impressive results for the Sooner men at the Arkansas Invitational included: junior Dermillo Wise taking second in the long jump and passing the NCAA provisional mark with a leap of 24-5.75 (7.46 meters); senior Anthony Francis taking top collegian honors (third overall) in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.08 seconds; sophomore Brayon Brown placing fourth in the 800 meters in 1:51.93; and sophomore Marcus Pugh (6.81) and junior Ronnie Pines (6.84) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 60-meter dash.

The Sooners return to Fayetteville this weekend for the Razorback Invitational (Friday, Jan. 20-Saturday, Jan. 21).
