Sooners In The NPF: Week 1

NORMAN, Okla. -- As a bonus to Oklahoma softball fans, the staff of SoonerSports.com will provide a weekly glimpse at former players competing in the National Pro Fastpitch league. Today's installment covers the beginning of the NPF season for two athletes and a season preview for another. Check back every Wednesday for an updated look at the Sooners in the professional ranks.

Three former Oklahoma Sooner softball players have joined the National Pro Fastpitch League. Heather Scaglione, Christina Enea and Erin Evans are pursuing their professional careers in New York, Chicago and Texas.

In the past week, Scaglione has had five at bats, three runs, zero hits, and one RBI. She currently has a .500 OB percent. The Juggernauts are currently in second place, as they have won four games, and lost one.

Scaglione was also chosen to help in the softball portion of the Derek Jeter Clinic, which benefits Turn 2 Foundation. She and two teammates set up a station to demonstrate proper pitching and defense techniques.

Enea has had nine at bats, zero runs, one hit, and two RBIs in the past week. She is hitting .111 and has a .385 on-base percentage. The Chicago Bandits have won three games and lost one. They are currently tied for third place with the Akron Racers.

The Texas Thunder opens their season against the Arizona Heat on June 9 at the brand new Big League Dreams Sports Park in League City, Texas. Last year, Evans excelled in bunting and defense and is expected to build upon her All-Star campaign of a season ago..

Enea and Scaglione will take a break from the NPF schedule and reunite with OU centerfielder Kristin Vesely at the 2005 Women's National Team Selection Camp. Based at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., the camp will run from June 13-17. The camp will select an 18-member national team and a 16-member elite team that will represent the United States in a variety of international events in 2005.

Scaglione was drafted in the first round by the New York Juggernauts in February and Enea was a third-round choice for the Chicago Bandits. Due to NCAA regulations, they were not allowed to officially sign with their franchise until the Sooners season was completed. Evans is starting her second season with the Texas Thunder.
