CARSON, Calif. -- OU sophomore-to-be Marcus Pugh finished fourth in the 200 late Friday night in the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships. Pugh ran a 21.03, equalling the time he ran during the 2004 USA junior national championship, to finish fourth and stay in the hunt for a spot on the USA Team for the upcoming Junior Pan American Championships. The USA meet continues through Sunday at the Home Depot Center.

The 2005 Junior Pan American Championships are scheduled for July 28-31 on the campus of the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario. Pugh advanced to the semifinal round of the 200 at the 2004 IAAF World Junior Championships last July.

Pugh entered the final with the fourth best time after finishing second in his heat with a 21.23 earlier Friday. Pugh did not run the outdoor 200 for the Sooners this past spring while battling injuries. He did run the 100 and was a key member of OU's 400-meter relay that qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

In his first meet as a pro, former Sooner DaBryan Blanton, now competing for Team Nike, finished eighth in the final of the Visa 100, running a 10.46 Saturday afternoon. That time was the worst of the three races Blanton ran during the USA Senior National championships. Blanton won his heat in the preliminaries on Friday with a 10.17. He then finished second in his semifinal heat earlier Saturday afternoon with a 10.12, equalling his season best in the race. The earlier 10.12, which came at the TCU Invitational, was wind aided while the semifinal time on Saturday came with an allowable wind.

Former Sooner All-American, LaBoris Bean, qualified for the semifinals in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a 50.16 during the first round on Friday, then finished last in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon with a time of 50.90. Another former Sooner, All-American Shomari Wilson, finished sixth in his heat in the prelims of the 100 on Friday night with a 10.56.

OU sophomore-to-be Brayon Brown finished ninth in the junior national 800-meter final with a time of 1:55.51, also run late Friday night. Amy Backel, who will join the Sooner team this fall, finished 13th in the women's javelin with a 119-2. She recorded that effort on her first throw in the junior division of the women's javelin during competition on Saturday morning. Donald Gies, who redshirted during the 2004-2005 academic year as a true freshman, finished 14th in the junior 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 10:09.37 Saturday evening.
