Softball Blanked In Big 12 Opener

May 11, 2005 | Softball

OKLAHOMA CITY The No. 10 Oklahoma softball team was shut out by Nebraska ace Ashley DeBuhr in its Big 12 Tournament opener on Wednesday night in Oklahoma City.  DeBuhr held the Sooners to two hits to earn the 1-0 victory over the second-seeded Sooners.

“It is frustrating, I don't know any other way to describe it,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso.  “DeBuhr got ahead of us in the count consistently in the first half of the game and then I felt like we were swinging defensively.  She did an outstanding job against us tonight.”

It wasn't pretty for OU, who only advanced one runner into scoring position, did not garner a walk and went down in order in their final 10 at bats.

A steep head wind of 25 MPH didn't help either offense in the game.  Both squads were limited to two hits through five frames and only the Huskers were able to produce a score.  The offense came on a solo home run  to right field by NU catcher Jamie Waldecker.

The Sooners only two hits were turned in by Kami Keiter, a leadoff double in the third, and Jessica Leslie, a single in the fourth inning.

Senior Kami Keiter took the loss to drop to 27-6 on the season.  Keiter worked a complete game, the 86th of her career, while allowing four hits and one earned run.  The Sooner ace also tallied six strikeouts.

It was the second shutout of the day for DeBuhr, who blanked Texas Tech in their Big 12 opener, which immediately preceded the contest with OU.

“One thing I know right now is that this team loves to battle,” said Gasso.  “They have done it before and they understand what it takes to climb a hill.”

Now the Sooners will face No. 6 seed Kansas at 2 p.m. on Field 4 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.  If OU wins the elimination contest it would advance to play at 11 a.m. on Friday.
