May 11, 2005 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.   When the Big 12 handed out the yearly softball hardware the Oklahoma Sooners were well represented.  Norrelle Dickson, Christina Enea, Kami Keiter, Heather Scaglione and Kristin Vesely were all named to the Coaches All-Big 12 First Team.  Second place OU and regular-season champion Texas A&M tied with a conference leading five First Team honorees.

“They are very deserving,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso.  “I know that these five players are among the top 19 players in the league, but was is really important is that they went on the field and proved their abilities.  They have been appropriately awarded for playing at a consistently high level in what might be the toughest conference in the country this season.

OU's five players were among the 19 named to the First Team.  The Sooners did not have anyone named to the Second Team.

Complete All-Big 12 Team

It marks the fourth time since the inception of the Big 12 (1996), that OU has placed at least five players on the First Team.  The school record of six was set in 2000 and 2001.

For Keiter and Scaglione it was the fourth All-Big 12 honors of their careers.  It marked the second first team honor for both players.  It was the third honor of Enea and Vesely's careers, while it marked the first such honor for Dickson.  It marked the third first team honor for Enea and the second for Vesely.

Scaglione received the third highest vote total behind, Amanda Scarborough (Texas A&M) and Cat Osterman (Texas), after leading the conference in nearly every power category for the second consecutive Big 12 season.  In Big 12 action, Scaglione had eight home runs, 18 RBI, 50 total bases and a .893 slugging percentage, all of which led the league.

Dickson and her .393 batting average ranked as the fourth best mark during conference action.  Dickson also tallied a .469 on base percentage and five stolen bases during the league stretch.

Enea hit. 357 during the Big 12 season, which she highlighted by single handedly defeated Oklahoma State and Nebraska during the second half of the season. She collected one home run, nine RBI and four doubles.

Keiter did what great aces do, win.  She had a 10-2 mark in Big 12 play, which ranked as the second highest win total and winning percentage.  She also hit. 244 with six home runs and 12 RBI during the 18-game stretch.

Vesely, who leads the Big 12 with a .463 batting average during all contests, hit .317 in league action. She recorded 14 runs, 19 hits, two doubles, one home run, five RBI and a .464 on base percentage.

The Sooners begin play in the Big 12 Tournament in a few hours.  OU opens against the winner of the 5 p.m. play-in game between No. 7-seed Nebraska and No. 10-seed Iowa State.  First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. on Field 4 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
