Tulsa Sweeps Season Series From No. 5 Softball

April 20, 2005 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.  The No. 5 Oklahoma softball team (42-10) has defeated three top-10 teams in the last two weeks, but for the fourth time in the last five meetings the Sooners were unable to knock off regional-rival Tulsa (22-28).  On Wednesday night, OU starter Nicole Denes gave up a one-run lead by allowing five seventh inning runs to give the Golden Hurricane a 6-2 win.

Christina Enea's two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Sooners a 2-1 lead entering the seventh inning.

Then Tulsa exploded for five runs with two outs.  A walk and an ntentional walk, loaded the bases for TU right fielder Lindsey Tower.  Denes was one strike away from the victory, when Tower tied it up a with a single to center.  A error by Kristin Vesely gave the Hurricane a 3-2 lead and allowed the runner from second to score on Tower's single.  The final blow was a three run, bases clearing doubled by Sara Dyer.

Box Score: Tulsa 6, No. 5 Oklahoma 2

OU went down in order in their half of the seventh inning and handed Tulsa its first ever season sweep.

Tulsa manufactured a run in the first inning.  Leadoff hitter Julie Shafer worked a walk, moved to second on a sac bunt and trotted to third base when Nicole Denes uncorked a wild pitch.  She came home on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Stephanie Sliepen.

For Denes, who allowed six runs (two earned), it is her first loss of her junior season.  She now stands at 8-1 with a 2.29 ERA.

OU had six hits in the game.  USA Softball Player of the Year candidate Kristin Vesely (2-for-3) and Nicole Denes (2-for-3) were the only players with multiple hits.

The win for TU went to releiver Maren Genow, who worked three innings of scoreless ball.  She improved to 7-6 on the season and picked up her third win over OU in the last two seasons.

The Sooners, who are a half-game out of first place in the Big 12, will attempt to snap the two-game slide when they travel to Kansas for a pair of games this weekend.  The opener is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., while the finale will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
