March 29, 2005 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla.   All-America candidate Kristin Vesely was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon, which marks the second weekly honor for OU's center fielder this season.  Vesely hit .700 last week and led OU to a 2-1 mark, including a sweep in the conference opener against Iowa State.

In 10 at-bats, Vesely recorded seven hits, one double, one run scored and one RBI.  The Phoenix, Ariz., native tied a career high when she went 4-for-4 in the Sooners' 4-2 loss to Tulsa last Wednesday. Vesely ended the week going 3-for-6 in the double header victories against the Cyclones.  She also tallied two stolen bases, an .800 slugging percentage and a .728 on-base percentage.

“Vesely has been in a zone that I have never seen from any player,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso.  “I don't even like talking about it because I am don't want to jinx it.  She is in complete control when she steps into the batter's box.  That has translated into a tremendous batting average (.535) and an extremely high level of consistency.”

The speedy lefty has hit safely in 33 of 39 games this season, including 31 of the last 32 during which time she has hit .596.  She also set the OU record with 23-game hitting streak (2/13-3/13) during which time she hit .638 and improved her season average to .556, which is a season high.

Vesely also earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the games of March 1-7.  During that stretch she hit .667 while extending her hitting streak to 18. The Phoenix, Ariz., native's streak was tied for the longest stretch in school history.  On the week, Vesely recorded nine runs, 14 hits (14-for-21), seven RBI, four doubles, six stolen bases, and an .857 slugging percentage and a .696 on base percentage.

It is the third Player of the Week award of the season for OU.  Senior Jessica Leslie garnered the Big 12 and Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week awards on March 15.

OU lead all Big 12 schools with 41 weekly awards since the inception of the conference in 1996.
