Keiter Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week

March 01, 2005 | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. --  Oklahoma senior Kami Keiter was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the games of Feb. 22-28, the league office announced.

Keiter (6-1) extended her scoreless innings streak to 35 innings and her consecutive shutout streak to four while leading the Sooners to the NFCA Leadoff Classic championship.

Keiter began the weekend by limiting Michigan State to one hit and striking out six, while also not allowing a single Spartan to reach scoring position.  The Colorado native came back the next day and out-dueled 2004 All-American Casey Hunter and No. 21 Florida State.  Keiter held the Seminoles' lineup to three hits while striking out eight batters.

“Kami looks so in control and in command in the circle,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso after her start against FSU. “She isn't giving teams a chance to breathe and when she gets in a zone like this, everything else falls in place.  Our team hits, we play flawless defense and it all starts with her.  The team is really feeding off of her efforts right now.”

On the weekend Keiter did not walk a single batter and only allowed five runners (all against FSU) to reach scoring position.  The Spartans and Seminoles combined to hit .100 against OU's ace.

Keiter's scoreless innings streak began on Feb. 5 and has spanned four tournaments.  During the stretch she has struck out 34 batters and allowed just 13 hits.  Only two runners have reached third base over the 35 innings, while a total of just nine have reached scoring position.  Opponents are hitting .115 against the lefty since the beginning of the streak.

She also produced at the plate during the Leadoff Classic.  She hit .400 with four hits, two doubles and three RBI.

It is the first such honor of the season for OU and the first for Keiter since March 18, 2003.  It is the third time Keiter career that she has garnered the honor.

It is also the 38th weekly (player and pitcher) honor for the OU program, which is tops among Big 12 schools.

Micaela Minner of Missouri was named Big 12 player of the week.

The No. 13 Sooners (15-4) put their 13-game win streak on the line in a Wednesday doubleheader against Arkansas (7-8).  The twin bill will begin at 3 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.  Fans can also follow the action through live stats and the O-Zone web cast.
