ARLINGTON, Texas The Oklahoma wrestling team, ranked tenth, defeated No.11 Cornell at the second session of the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas, Saturday. Scoring big for the Sooners were Teyon Ware (141) and Matt Storniolo (149) both with a major decision and sophomore Charles Jones (157) with a fall at the 2:31 mark.
“That was a great win,” said head coach Jack Spates. “We started off tremendous, we had a lot of dominate performances.”
No. 4 Storniolo defeated No. 2 Dustin Manotti by a major decision after trailing in the match 4-1 at the end of the first period. Storniolo picked up six points in the second period and added a takedown and a nearfall in the third to win the match 12-4.
“Matt Storniolo's comeback from behind over the second-ranked kid in the country showed a lot of character,” said Spates. “We a extremely proud of him.”
Also defeating a ranked opponent, at 125 pounds, No.1 Hazewinkel defeated No. 17 Micheal Mormile by an 8-2 decision.
“Overall it was a strong win and a whole different performance then Thursday night against Army”
Later today the Sooners will wrestle in the sixth and seventh session of the Lone Star Duals. At 6 p.m. Oklahoma will face No. 23 Navy and at 8 p.m. they will finish the day with Purdue.
