TEMPE, Ariz. The Oklahoma wrestling team (6-1) defeated No. 18 Arizona State, 20-17 in Tempe, Ariz., Wednesday. Adding points to the board for the Sooners were undefeated Sam Hazewinkel (18-0) and Teyon Ware (16-0) who earned major decisions over their oppontents.
“It's tough because we've had five matches in a week,” said Sooners head coach Jack Spates. “I think our guys are a little run-down and they had to dig really deep tonight to get the win.”
After losing at 133, 157 and 165 pounds Oklahoma was only leading by four points going into 174 pound match. E.K. Waldhaus (174) beat Rick Renzi by a 13-7 decision, making the team score 17-10. Scoring the defining points for Oklahoma was Justin Dyer at 184 pounds. No. 14 Dyer escaladed Oklahoma to a 20-10 lead after upsetting eighth-ranked C.B. Dollaway in overtime, 9-7.
“Justin Dyer really was the hero of the meet,” said Spates. “He came back after a 4-1 deficit and battled real hard.”
“Sam and Teyon once again were dominating,” said Spates. “So, there were some real positives, but the bottom-line is it was a hard fought dual meet and we had to dig deep to make it happen.”
The Sooners will continue on the road to San Luis Obispo and Fresno, Calif., to compete against Cal Poly and Fresno State on Saturday, Jan. 15. Oklahoma will wrestle against Cal Poly at 11 a.m. and against Fresno State at 5 p.m. pacific standard.
