The Jenks, Okla., product advanced to the semifinal of the 200 meter dash at the 10th International Association of Athletics Federations World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy, last week. Pugh finished third in his heat with a 21.20 and was one of the automatic qualifiers to the semis. He ran a 21.61 in the semifinals and finished seventh in his heat.
Pugh was part of four state 6A championship track and field teams while competing at Jenks. He won the 100 and 200 meter dash state titles last May as a senior and was on two state relay championship teams. He set the state record in the 100 at the 6A regional meet with a 10.37, breaking a record that had stood for 24 years. He also set a state record in the 200 at the regional meet with a 20.80. That replaced a mark that had been on the books since 1990.
“Marcus will be a great addition to our squad,” said OU sprints coach Shanon Atkinson. “We work hard every year to get the state's top high school talent to sign with OU and Marcus is a great example of a sprinter a lot of schools wanted. He will be a key addition to the roster because of his ability to run the individual events as well as the relays.”
Push's winning state title time in the 100 was 10.46 and he ran a 21.12 to win the 200 title. The state title as a member of the 400 meter relay in 2004 was a repeat for Pugh and the Trojans.
He is ranked ninth in the country on the DyeState Elite list, one of the top ranking lists for high school track and field athletes.
He has earned All-America honors in the indoor 60, the outdoor 100 and the outdoor 200. He also competes for the Jenks America Track Club and was part of a national team championship with that program.
Pugh finished third in the 200 at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships the last weekend of June, posting a time of 21.03. That finish earned him the trip to Italy.
