Dickson Ready For Second National Elite Team Tour
June 30, 2004 | Softball
NORMAN, Okla. Sophomore third baseman Norrelle Dickson of the Oklahoma softball team is about to begin her second summer of competition with the USA National Elite Team. The Schutt USA National Elite Team will square off against 15 other national and regional squads during nine days of competition (July 3-11) at the Canada Cup in Surrey, British Columbia.
For Dickson it is a chance to build on the stellar international performance she turned in during last fall's ISF World Championships in Nanjing, China. Dickson hit .417 with two triples and five RBI during the 2003 World Championships.
“Playing with the Elite Team is a tremendous honor,” said Dickson. “It is an excellent opportunity for me to build upon my skills and develop against some of the toughest competition in the world. I learned a lot from the experience in 2003 and expect more of the same this summer.”

The Elite squad, which is a step below the Olympic Team, is composed of 16 collegiate players. Dickson is the only Big 12 player on the squad. UCLA has a team-high five players on board, including slugger Caitlin Benyi and hurler Lisa Dodd. Fellow Sooner and first team All-American Heather Scaglione turned down an official invite to play for the Elite Team because of an ankle injury that limited her during the entire 2004 postseason.
Dickson and company will play seven games during bracket play from July 3-9. Championship play begins Friday, July 9 with seedings determined by bracket play records.
The competition will be steep for the USA Elite Team, who begins play on July 3 against the Chinese Taipei Olympic Team. The Elite Team will also face the Olympic squads for New Zealand (July 7) and Canada (July 8). Other nations that have entered their Olympic squads are China, Australia and Japan. Below is USA's complete bracket play schedule:
July 3 | 2 p.m. | Chinese Taipei Olympic Team |
July 4 | 11 a.m. | Japanese Elite Team |
July 5 | 8:30 a.m. | Triple Crown Force |
July 5 | 1:30 p.m. | Buffalo Bisons |
July 6 | 11 a.m. | Bloomington Lady Hearts |
July 7 | 6:30 p.m. | New Zealand Olympic Team |
July 8 | 4:30 p.m. | Canada Olympic Team |
Dickson's summer duties with the USA squad will conclude at the Champions Cup from July 14-18 in Irvine, Calif. OU's official athletics web site, www.soonersports.com, will provide regular updates of both international tournaments.
