Scaglione Wins Big 12 Hitting Crown, Plus Six Other Titles

NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma junior catcher Heather Scaglione can add another seven honors to the lengthy list of accolades she has garnered this season. The Big 12 regular season concluded on Sunday afternoon and Scaglione finished as the best Big 12 hitter in seven categories during conference games.

Scaglione topped all conference hitters in batting average (.455), home runs (6), RBI (15), total bases (40), on-base percentage (.597), slugging percentage (.909) and walks (16). According to the Big 12 record book, she is the first player in conference history to lead in seven categories at the completion of a Big 12 schedule.

The Big 12 batting titles for all games are awarded after the Women's College World Series, when each member institution has fully completed its' season.

Scaglione has established herself as a favorite for the Big 12 Player of the Year award. In the conference ranks for the entire season, she leads the Big 12 in hits (65, tied with Norrelle Dickson), batting average (.417), home runs (15), RBI (45), total bases (120), on-base percentage (.531) and slugging percentage (.769), while she also ranks second in walks (38), third in runs scored (38) and fifth in doubles (10). She is the only player in conference hitting above .400, while also being the only player to eclipse .500 in on-base percentage and .700 in slugging percentage.

OU (37-17-1) hosts Tulsa (43-17) for Senior Night on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to take part in the festivities honoring Nicki Holt, Katie Overton and April Valdez.

The No. 5-seed Sooners begin play in the Big 12 Tournament against No. 4-seed Baylor on Thursday at 10 AM. Competition in the conference tourney begins Wednesday at the Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, but the Sooners do not play until the day two.

Conference awards, including Big 12 Player of the Year, and the All-Big 12 First and Second Teams will be announced on
Wednesday at a pre-tournament banquet.
