NORMAN, Okla. -- The Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday that junior catcher Heather Scaglione of the Oklahoma softball had garnered the Big 12 Player of the Week honor for the fifth time this season. The recognition extends her conference records for single-season (5) and career awards (6).
No other player in the history of the Big 12 has won more than four player honors during their career. This is the second straight week and fifth time this season Scaglione has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors. She is the only player in league history to earn the honor five times in one season. Last week she surpassed former OU standout Lynette Velazquez who was the conference player of the week three times during the 1999 season
In six official at bats last week, Scaglione had two home runs and three RBI while hitting .500. The San Diego, Calif., native's two-run home run against Oklahoma State was the game winner and ignited the Sooners to a 5-1 win.
During the weekend set with Iowa State, Scaglione went 2-for-3 with another home run and four base on balls - including two intentional passes. On the week Scaglione had staggering numbers in slugging percentage (1.500) and on-base percentage (.700).
Scaglione has 15 home runs and 38 base on balls this season and is now tied for the fifth-best single-season home run total in OU history. Her base on balls total is the second-best single-season mark in OU history and just three shy of the school record.
On the OU career lists, Scaglione moved up to No. 5 in walks (76) and No. 6 in home runs (29) during the last week.
The righty slugger leads the Big 12 in batting average (.417), hits (65), RBI (45), total bases (120), on-base percentage (.531) and slugging percentage (.769).
Scaglione's conference records only apply to the player of the week award. Texas starter Cat Osterman won the pitcher of the week award six times in 2002 and has taken it home 11 times in her career.
The Sooner softball squad is in the midst of a 10-day break for finals. OU will play its final regular-season game on May 11 against Tulsa. The home finale will be highlighted by Senior Night festivities. Nicki Holt, Katie Overton and April Valdez will be honored prior to the contest.
The Big 12 Tournament begins Wednesday, May 12, but the Sooners will not play until the second day of competition on May 13. OU, which is currently a No. 5 seed, will face Baylor (No. 4 seed) in its first game at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 13.
