Oklahoma Men's Golf Finishes Third at NCAA Central Regional

May 22, 2004 | Men's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's golf team concluded the NCAA Central Regional on the Kampen Course (par 72) in West LaFayette, Ind., in third place after shooting a tournament third-round-best 297 on Saturday.  The top-10 finish secured a spot for the Sooners in the NCAA Championships in Hotsprings, Va., June 1-4 for the 30th time in school history.

The Sooners came on strong in the last two rounds of the regional by shooting 294 and 297 to finish above three schools seeded higher than them, including No. 2-ranked Texas.  The third-place finish was their highest at a regional since they tied for first in 2001.  This marked the sixth time in eight spring tournaments that Oklahoma finished in the top five.

“I'm really proud of the team today,” OU head coach Jim Ragan said.  “We didn't play really well in the first round of the tournament, but the team came back to put up the second-best round yesterday and the best round today.”

Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Anthony Kim (La, Quinta, Calif.) finished the tournament in fifth place to lead the Sooners.  Kim, a freshman, carded a 72 on Saturday to bring his three-round total to 218 (+2).  Kim finished four strokes off the leader, John Holmes of Kentucky.  The regional marked the fifth time this spring that Kim finished in the top five of a tournament.

Fellow freshman Carlos Del Moral (Valencia, Spain) had a strong finish to the regional on Saturday and rose 25 spots on the leaderboard by shooting a 71 (-1).  Del Moral's three-round total of 223 (+7) tied him for 17th.  Senior Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas) finished one stroke behind Del Moral with a three-round total of 224 (+8).  Flores finished in a tie for 21st place.

Rounding out the scoring for the Sooners were seniors Blake Martin (Stigler, Okla.) and Doug Manor (Garland, Texas),  who both finished the tournament with a 233 (+17) in a tie for 66th place.

“Everyone stepped up their play a lot in this tournament,” Ragan said.  “This was a very tough regional field and our players fought hard to finish ahead of some great competition.”

The Sooners will return to action at the Cascades Golf Course, where Virginia Tech will be hosting the 2004 NCAA Championships on June 1-4.
