Overton And Denes Named To Academic All-Big 12 Teams

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Big 12 Conference announced the Academic All-Big 12 First and Second Teams Wednesday afternoon and Oklahoma senior shortstop Katie Overton and sophomore pitcher Nicole Denes were among the athletes honored.  Overton was a first team selection for the second time in her career (also in 2002), while Denes garnered the recognition for the first time in her career.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the softball academic all-league squad consists of 31 first team members combined with 17 on the second team. First team members have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must record a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests.  Pitchers must have at least one inning pitched per game played by the team or have appeared in 35 percent of their team's total games.  Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The No. 21 Oklahoma softball team will open the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4-seed Baylor at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Don E. Porter ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.  Play begins in the conference tourney on Wednesday with the survivor's of the elimination games facing the top two seeds, Nebraska (1) and Texas A&M (2).
