Martin Qualifies for NCAA Regional in Vault at Texas Relays

Martin Finishes Second in Pole Vault at Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. -- Freshman Scott Martin cleared 17-5 on his second attempt, then missed three attempts at 17-9, the winning height, to finish second in the pole vault during second day action of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships Firday at John Jacobs Field. A crowd of 1,156 braved the weather as thunderstorms, rain and cool northerly winds moved across Norman throughout the day.

Martin's vault was a career best and moved him to eighth on the all-time OU career honor roll.

Junior Austin Landreth finished seventh with a 16-4.75.

Junior Dan Strong finished seventh in the decathlon, recording a career best score of 6,539 points. He registered season bests in the 1500, the 110-meter high hurdles and the javelin in today's action. The hurdle and the javelin marks also were career bests in decathlon competition.

The Sooners also got points in the long jump with Cory Crosby finishing fifth and Robert Smith finishing seventh.

Junior Chaundra Allard tied for seventh in the heptathlon, posting season bests in the 800 and the long jump to come from 12th to seventh and finish with 4,631 points. Veronica Clayborne finished 11th in the heptathlon with 4,489 points after posting season bests in each of the three events on the second day of competition. Lucretia Rimmer posted a career best in the long jump with an 18-11.5.

Heading into the final day of competition, the OU men are tied for fifth with 18 points after six events and the Sooner women are 12th with 2.5 points after seven events.

Senior Laverne Jones was the top qualifier in the 100 with an 11.45, tying Sanya Richards of Texas for the top qualifying mark. Jones and Richards also had the top two times in the 200 with Richard finishing her heat in 22.73 and Jones closing in 22.95.

On the men's side, the sprint battlecame down to OU's DaBryan Blanton and of Brendan Christian of Texas. Christian had the top qualifying time in the 100 with a 10.39 while Blanton finished in 10.43. It was even closer in the 200 with Christian taking the top qualifying spot with a 20.61. Blanton had the next best time with a 20.62.

Other Sooner qualifiers for the women included Catherine Odell, who had the second fastest time in the 1500 with a 4:27.61, a career best mark by nearly five seconds and Jessica Eldridge, who led all qualifiers in the 800 with a 2:06.86, also a career best mark. Odell's time beat the NCAA Regional qualifying mark by two seconds, her first time to qualify this season. Eldridge's time improved her regional qualifying mark in the 800.

On the men's side, freshman Salah Hussein qualified for the final in the 1500; David Wright qualified for the final in the 110-meter high hurdles; Dwayne Duhaney advanced to the final in the 400; and Josh Scott qualified in the 100 and the 200;

Action resumes in the meet at 1 p.m. Saturday with the finals in the women's triple jump, the first of seven field event finals. The running event finals begin with the 400-meter relay at 4 p.m. and conclude with the 1600-meter relay at 7:30 p.m.
