FULLERTON, Calif. The No. 7 Oklahoma softball team lost an eight inning battle with No. 9 Washington, 1-0, Saturday night at the Kia Klassic on the campus of Cal-State Fullerton. On the other side, Boek improved to 13-3 on the year with a line of eight innings, four hits, three base on balls, eight strikeouts and the all important shutout.
Washington threatened in the first inning as Keiter allowed a single and consecutive walks to load the bases with two outs. Washington third baseman Kathy Friske battled to a 3-2 count before the Sooner ace blew an outside rise ball past her for the whiff and final out of the inning.
Keiter, who worked efficiently through the Husky lineup in the middle innings, needed junior catcher Heather Scaglione for the quick fourth frame. After an infield single skipped off the glove of third baseman Jamie Fox, the Huskies tried to put the wheels in motion. Washington shortstop Amanda Olson tried to steal on Scaglione but failed and became the eighth runner of 10 this season to be gunned down. The next batter, Courtney Jeffries, popped up weakly behind the Sooner signal caller, who did a quick 180 and swiped the ball out of the air for the final out of the inning.
The Sooners threated with runner at third base and one out in their half of the eighth inning but April Valdez and Christina Enea were unable to come up with the crucial hit.
The Sooners finish with a 2-3 record in the Klassic and now must prepare for the Big 12 season. OU begins with games at Texas A&M, March 27 and 28. The Sooners have a quick turnout as they face a doubleheader at Baylor, who has the best record in the conference, on March 29.
The shutout defeat marks the first time OU has not scored a run in a game this season. The loss also drops OU to 1-3 against top-10 teams this season.
