Norrelle Dickson, the starting shortstop for the No. 9 Oklahoma softball team, was named Big 12 Player of the Week after leading the Sooners to a 5-1 record in the OU/Worth Invitational last weekend. Dickson, a freshman from Orange, Calif., was virtually unstoppable at the plate last weekend. She batted .632 over six tournament games and reached base safely 17 times in 25 plate appearances for an on-base percentage of .680.
She also accomplished a rare feat in collegiate softball by hitting an inside-the-park home run against New Mexico on March 12. OU's leadoff hitter had impressive stats with five runs scored, five RBI, four stolen bases in four attempts, and a slugging percentage of .842. Dickson led all tournament players in hits (12 in 19 official at-bats), on-base percentage, stolen bases, and walks. Dickson, who hit safely in all six games, also recorded a career-high three RBI in the finale against Centenary.
With the weekend outburst, she improved her season batting average from .400, ranked No. 3 in the Big 12 going into the weekend, to .444. The first-year Sooner has already reached the record books in stolen bases where she already is tied for the eighth-best single season total (17) in Oklahoma softball history.
Dickson is the fourth Sooner to garner a Big 12 weekly honor. Junior catcher Heather Scaglione has earned the Big 12 Player of the Week honor on two occasions, while Nicole Denes was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 2. Listed below are all the Big 12 weekly winners:
