Softball Crushes Fourth Straight Team

Keiter Leads Softball Past San Diego State, 4-1

March 16, 2004 | Softball

The No. 9 Oklahoma softball team began its week in California with a 4-1 win over San Diego State.  Kami Keiter did not allow an earned run and junior April Valdez provided all the offense OU needed with two RBI.  The Sooners improve to 24-6-1 on the season, while San Diego State fell to 16-16.

After a couple rallies fell short in the third and fourth innings, OU posted four runs in the top half of the fifth inning.  Jamie Fox reached on an infield error to start the inning.  Jessica Leslie reached on a sacrifice and moved into scoring position on Norrelle Dickson's second infield single of the game.  With the bases loaded April Valdez hit the first pitch from Aztec ace Cori Janelli through the right side of the infield for two RBI.

Box Score

The Sooners picked up their third run on a botched pick off play.  The fourth was delivered by San Diego County native Mariee Mena, who singled to center driving in Valdez.

Sooner ace Kami Keiter sparkled under the California sun.  Keiter, who has not allowed an earned run in 13 innings, allowed just four hits and has given up only five hits during the streak.  Keiter, who is rounding into mid-season form after missing the first month with an injury, improves to 2-1 and lowered her team leading ERA to 0.50.

Dickson, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, moved into sole possession of eighth place on the OU single season stolen bases list with her 18th swipe in the third inning. Dickson was 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored.  Junior catcher Heather Scaglione had season-high nine game hitting streak snapped by going 0-for4.

Oklahoma travels north to Fullerton, Calif., for the stacked Kia Klassic.  OU begins play in Pool D Thursday at 11 a.m. (CST) against Illinois.  OU will also play No. 15 Fresno State and No. 1 Arizona in pool play before championship play begins Friday evening.  Eight teams ranked in the top-25, including No. 1 Arizona, No. 3 Florida State, No. 8 Louisiana Lafayette, will be competing in Fullerton this weekend.
