Softball Run Rules UMass In NFCA Opener

The No. 5 Oklahoma softball team cruised to a 9-0 run-rule win in its opener against UMass at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Friday evening. The combination of Nicole Denes' dominant pitching and Heather Scaglione's and Jamie Fox potent bats doomed the Minutemen in the six inning contest.

A bases loaded walk to sophomore Mariee Mena put the Sooners first run on the board in the top of the second inning. OU added another three runs in the third inning, thanks in part to junior Heather Scaglione's sixth home run of the season. A run-scoring single by Jessica Leslie put the Sooners up 4-0 after their half of the third frame.

Oklahoma manufactured a couple runs and upped its advantage to 6-0 through four innings. Christina Enea picked up an RBI with a single to left, while freshman Amber Spaulding scored on a passed ball in the fourth session.

The final blow came in the top of the sixth as Jamie Fox extended her perfect day (4-for-4) with a three-run home run. The blast is the fourth of the season for the freshman. Fox is hitting .571 with three home runs and 13 RBI over the last nine games. Fox has recorded a hit in seven consecutive at-bats heading into the Sooners second game of the day.

Nicole Denes was dealing from the get go. She threw nine consecutive strikes to begin the game and punched-out four of the first six batters to step in the box. On the evening she would throw five innings and allow just one seeing-eye single in the third innning. She struck out six batters and walked just one. Denes improves to 9-2 on the season.

OU essentially plays a double header as they face Central Michigan at 6:30 p.m. (CST).
