Scaglione Snags Big 12 Player Of The Week Honors

Junior catcher Heather Scaglione of the Oklahoma softball team was named Big 12 Player of the Week after garnering MVP honors at the LSU Tiger Classic last weekend. Scaglione hit. 389 on the weekend with two home runs and seven RBI.

“Heather had a tremendous weekend and was an exceptional leader for us,” said OU head coach Patty Gasso. “Aside from her offensive numbers she was outstanding behind the plate. She stopped four runners at home plate and that toughness was a great motivator to her team. A sign of the respect she is getting around the country is the fact that she didn't have one runner attempt to steal on her this weekend. This is a very deserving honor and great start to her season.”

Scaglione was the unanimous MVP for her offensive and defensive work during the Tiger Classic. Her home run and extra base totals (15) were the highest in the tournament, while her RBI total ranked second to teammate Jessica Leslie. During championship play last Sunday, the Escondido, Calif., catcher turned it up another level as she recorded RBI on each of her three hits. Her two RBI in the championship game against Illinois accounted for all of Sooners' runs.

The cleanup hitter ignited the Sooners offense in the season opening win (7-0) against Illinois with a two RBI and home run. Scaglione made the most of her one official at-bat in OU's third game against Centenary by hitting a two-run home run off the foul poll in left field.

Scaglione's work with the Sooner pitching staff that was devoid of All-American Kami Keiter also stood out. The backstop worked with freshman Jessica Johnson who tallied a 2-0 record, one shutout, two complete games, one save and a tournament-best 0.52 ERA in her collegiate debut weekend.

Scaglione stonewalled four runners at home plate over the weekend. She blocked the go ahead run in the championship game against Illinois, while ending innings and rallies againt Centenary, Southeastern Louisiana and No. 14 LSU.

In other news, OU claimed the No. 4 spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 for the second consecutive week.

The Oklahoma softball team, which is 5-0-1 on the season, opens the home schedule Wednesday at 4 p.m., against Oklahoma Christian. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
