Softball Thumps Seminole State, 15-4, In Fall Opener

Norman, Okla.- The Oklahoma softball team opened the fall season by thumping Seminole State, 15-4, in an extended 12 inning game. Several newcomers turned in clutch hits, while senior Katie Overton led the offense with three RBIs.

OU fell behind 2-0 in top half of the first inning but came roaring back with four runs in the bottom half thanks to RBI hits off the bats of Heather Scaglione, Jamie Fox and Katie Overton.

Starting pitcher Kami Keiter blanked Seminole State in the second and third innings before being relieved by Denes. Denes collected four punch-outs, while allowing the Seminole offense one hit during innings three through six.

Overton picked up her second RBI with a run scoring double in the third that plated Fox. Fellow veteran Christina Enea knocked home freshman Norelle Dickson to extend the Sooners lead in the sixth.

The teams took a short break between the sixth and seventh innings and resumed play with the score at 6-2.

Keiter struck out the side to begin the second session, threw three innings and again handed the the ball off to Denes. Denes turned in six innings of scoreless work, while striking out seven and allowing just two hits on the afternoon.

Overton knocked in her third run of the game in the eighth with a run scoring single that Jessica Leslie scored on. Aleman and Dickson added RBI's of their own in the eighth to put OU up 9-2.

Kristen Vesely went 3-for-4 in the second session and started a four run rally in the ninth inning with an RBi single. Marie Mena followed with a two-run double plating Overton and Vesely. Freshman Amber Spaulding also knocked in her first Sooner RBI by plating fellow rookie Fox.

OU would add a run in the 11th and 12th innings and close out Seminole State 15-4.

OU, 1-0 in fall, will play five games this weekend in the Oklahoma Shootout in Oklahoma City at the ASA Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium. OU begins tourney action Friday against St. Gregory's at 8 p.m. on the north field.
