Women's Basketball Gives Back Through United Way

August 07, 2003 | Women's Basketball

Giving back to the community has always been a priority for Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale and her women's basketball teams. The Sooners were spotted Wednesday giving back to Norman?s United Way as they volunteered their time at "My Friend's House."

The United Way's goal behind this camp is to provide children the opportunity to stay active throughout the summer and to have a place to visit other kids with diverse backgrounds within the age range of 6-12 years old.

The women's basketball team enjoyed talking with and answering questions from the campers. The funniest questions of the day came from a child asking the players who wore the biggest shoe - the answer size 14 worn by freshman Casey Walker.

"I have enjoyed spending time here," said incoming sophomore Chelsi Welch. "It's a great opportunity to meet young Sooner fans and to express the importance of school and having fun."

The team stressed getting a good education, setting goals and staying drug free as paths to success.

OU has won three Big 12 Conference titles, within the last four years, and appeared in the 2002 NCAA national championship game.
