SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Michael Westlund was one of 15 vaulters to clear the second height in the qualifying round of the men's pole vault competition Wednesday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships to advance to Friday's final.
Westlund and the other 14 cleared 16-10.75 to advance to the final set for 6 p.m. (Pacific time) on Friday. Westlund and five other vaulters cleared the first and second height without a miss and three who advanced to the final passed on the first height. The vaulters will begin competition on Friday at 16-10.75 with a clean slate.
The news wasn't as good for OU's other entrant in the men's pole vault as sophomore Austin Landreth was eliminated after clearing the opening height of 16-4.75, then missing all three attempts at 16-10.75. Landreth won the NCAA Midwest Regional title May 31 by clearing 17-7. He missed on his first attempt at 16-4.75 before clearing on his second.
Three other Sooners advanced to the next round of competition during preliminaries Wednesday morning. DaBryan Blanton finished second in his heat of the 100 to earn an automatic spot in tonight's semifinals. Blanton ran a 10.57 which tied for the fourth fastest prelim time to advance. The men's 100 semifinals are scheduled for 9:05 p.m. (Pacific time) tonight.
LaVerne Jones ran an 11.73 to finish fourth in her heat of the women's 100 and was one of six to advance on time to tonight's semifinal round which is scheduled for 8:55 p.m. (Pacific time).
The final in the women's 100 is set for Friday at 8:55 p.m. with the men's 100 final to follow at 9:05 p.m.
Aldwyn Sappleton took the lead from the gun in his heat of the 800 meter preliminary and held the lead through 600 meters. He ultimately was third in his heat with a 1:49.35 to advance to Thursday's semifinal round. His prelim time was the 12th best in the morning's heats. The semifinal for the 800 is scheduled for 11:25 a.m. Thursday.
Still scheduled to compete during the first day of action at the NCAA Championships is freshman Kevin Bookout who will be the final thrower in the final flight of the men's shot put. The shot put is scheduled to start at 8:35 p.m. (Pacific time). The top 12 plus any ties will advance to the final which is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Jones will compete in the preliminaries of the women's 200 at 10:15 a.m. Thursday and Kyle Bookout is scheduled to compete in the third flight of the qualifying round of the men's discus which also begins at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday.
