OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - No. 4 Oklahoma knocked off Baylor, 1-0, to set up a showdown with Oklahoma State at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The postseason matchup will be the third meeting between the intrastate rivals this season. The Sooners beat OSU, 2-1, in Norman on April 2 but the Cowgirls took a 4-0 game in Stillwater on April 24.
Oklahoma (40-11) eliminated Baylor from the tournament with its victory over the Bears in the morning game.
The Sooners struck early with an RBI single by senior shortstop Kelli Braitsch (1-for-2) in the first inning for the game winner. Leadoff batter Kristin Vesely (1-for-3) flied out to left field to begin the game for the Sooners but senior centerfielder Erin Evans (2-for-2) singled to reach first. Leah Gulla (1-for-2) then connected to send the ball to right field, pushing Evans to second.
Braitsch's single to center field allowed Evans to sprint home for the lone score of the game.
OU ace Kami Keiter moved to 28-6 on the season in the complete game from the mound for the Sooners. Keiter fanned four batters without a walk and gave up two hits. Oklahoma recorded its 19th shutout of the season and second of the tournament with the 1-0 win.
The Sooners face No. 2-seed Oklahoma State in the 5 p.m. game at Hall of Fame Stadium. The Cowgirls blanked Baylor, 8-0, in the opening round and outlasted Nebraska, 3-2, in nine innings Friday night.
If OU beats Oklahoma State, the two teams will play again on Sunday morning to determine which school advances to the championship game Sunday at 2:30. An OSU win in today's game would eliminate Oklahoma from the tournament and would send the Cowgirls to the championship game without a rematch.
Oklahoma has an unblemished 4-0 mark against Oklahoma State in Big 12 Tournament games.
The game will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Southwest (cable channel 37 in Oklahoma City area). Visit SoonerSports.com for live updates from the Phillips 66 2003 Big 12 Softball Tournament.
