Sooner T&F Teams Head To Austin For Second Meet This Spring

NORMAN, Okla. - Taking an opportunity to compete once more at the site of the upcoming Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Sooners headed south Friday to compete in the Texas Invitational. Field events begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium while running events begin at 9 a.m. and continue through the men's 1600-meter relay, scheduled for 4:35 p.m. Saturday.

The Field
On the men's side, 10th-ranked Texas will serve as host to Florida, Texas A&M, Baylor, Dallas Baptist, Houston, Huston-Tillotson, McMurry, Oklahoma, Rice, Sam Houston State, South Florida, Southwest Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Trinity, UT-Pan American, UT-San Antonio and Wiley College. The third-ranked UT women will host Florida State, Baylor, Dallas Baptist, Houston, Hutson-Tillotson, McMurry, Oklahoma, Sam Houston State, South Florida, Southwest Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Trinity, UT-Pan American, UT-San Antonio and Wiley College.

The Last Time Out I -- Penn Relays
The Sooners sent 22 student-athletes to the 109th Penn Relays last weekend, and the end result, was a lot of success. Highlights included the women's distance medley relay (Terrika Warren, Alaina Dearman, Aisha Stringer, Nicola Maye) winning its division on Thursday night. Kelsey Moore finished fifth in the high jump while Joe McNair finished fourth in the 5000 and Jimmy Buchanan was 10th in the same event. The men's sprint medley relay (Sean Williams, Dwayne Duhaney, L'eron George, Aldwyn Sappleton) finished seventh on Friday. The men's 1600-meter relay (David Coombs, Duhaney, Sappleton, Robert Smith) posted an NCAA regional qualifying mark. On Saturday, DaBryan Blanton finished second in the 100-meter dash and LaVerne Jones was fourth in the women's 100-meter dash.

The times posted by McNair, Buchanan and Darren Hutchins (10,000 meter) were career bests.

The Last Time Out II -- Drake Relays
Robin Hanna led the Sooner performers at the 94th annual Drake Relays, finishing third in the pole vault. Kyle Bookout finished fourth in the discus and Kevin Bookout was fifth in the shot put. Blake Culp finished 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career best mark.

Big 12 Honoree
OU freshman DaBryan Blanton became the first two-time Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week award winner for the Sooners this spring. Blanton was honored on April 28 for his performance at the Penn Relays. In addition to finishing second in the 100, Blanton ran on the 400-meter relay.

Kevin Bookout won the award on April 21 for his performance in the shot put at the Michael Johnson Classic, his third win in three meets. His older brother, Kyle Bookout, was the first honoree of the season, winning the award on March 24. Blanton also was honored March 31.

Hicks Returns This Weekend
Senior Jimyria Hicks, who was injured at the Texas-Arlington Invitational on March 29, will return to the Sooner entries at the Texas Invitational. Hicks helped the 400-meter relay team post an NCAA Regional qualifying mark before getting hurt at the UTA meet. She will run on the 400-meter relay and is entered in the 200-meter dash Saturday.

Up Next
The Sooners will send pole vaulters to the Abilene Christian Invitational on Thursday. The rest of the team will continue preparation for the Big 12 Championship to be held in Austin May 17-19.
